The “Children’s Week @ Your Library” event at the Northam Public Library is to be a day of community connection: an opportunity for parents within the Shire and further to be aware of the facilities which are available to them in the Wheatbelt area to promote their child’s health, development and safety. We are partnering with WA Health to host a day of information and fun for carers and children. In the morning from 9.30 to 11am, WA Health Service will provide a series of activities for the preschool children: some sensory activities, fine motor tasks, language tasks. Their focus for the session is to provide an interactive experience for the children that demonstrates appropriate activities that families can engage with at home, to promote their child’s development. The Library will provide a morning tea at 11 for parents with a story time and craft activity for the children, and library staff will chat to parents about programs run in the library and about resources on parenting and early child literacy development. In the afternoon at 3.30pm, the enclosed garden of the library will host a face painter and a magician for an afternoon “fair” for primary school aged children, with booths set up by the library and other program providers to inform parents of their programs for that age group. The day’s timetable will read: 9.30-11am WA Health Service sensory activity and parent discussion 11am-12pm Library preschool story time and craft 3.30pm-5pm Library “fair” including magician, facepainting, information stalls from local children’s programs. This is a day based on promoting a child’s physical development and wellbeing, but also reaffirming to both children and parents that they are part of a community that values their wellbeing and supports them in their journey. The Library will keep banners, brochures and flyers available for parents throughout the week so they can contact the organisations for further information. We will be giving out calico promotional show bags, with the logos of the Shire, PCYC, WA Health, the Department of Communities, Lotterywest, Healthway and Meerilinga.
