In 2025, we’re celebrating the idea that everyone should know about children’s rights! This means that, while Children’s Week only comes around once a year, there’s always opportunities to help our children know and embrace their rights more fully.
One of the ways that Meerilinga, the convener of Children’s Week WA, has done this is to create and install Play Communication Boards in each of their Early Learning areas. These visual supports, designed in collaboration with Neurominded, support Article 12 of the Rights of the Child: Every child has the right to be heard.
These vinyl and core flute boards help achieve this by allowing children to use large picture symbols to communicate common actions, wants and needs that combines with a colour-coded system that help children build basic sentence structure in a playful and accessible way.
